Imma add something for those who say the backwards compatible model isn't needed if you already have a PS2. The BC PS3 is quite possibly the best official way to play PS2 games on a modern television. It does an amazing job of upscaling and smoothing out jaggies that would otherwise look pretty bad if your PS2 was hooked up.
The original plan for the PS3 was to play all these games, but the consoleโ€™s cell processor - the unit that gave the PS3 its edge - made the future a lot more complicated for Sony.
The most energy efficient slims started appearing with the CECH-21xxA units. The last Super Slims do have a slightly smaller capacity power supply, though. - The Super Slim CECH-4200, and later units, bans analog output of Blu-Ray material in order to comply with more restrictive DRM guidelines for 2014 on. The PS3 has radios for Wi-Fi b/g and Bluetooth 2.0 EDR. The PS3 also has 1000 megabit (1 gigabit) ethernet. The logo on the PlayStation 3 console can be rotated for use in horizontal or vertical orientations. The PS3 uses standard 2.5 inch Serial ATA (SATA) interface hard disk drives. The best consoles for ps3 games are slim series 2100/2500/3000 or any super slim. Prices are usually similar. all are reliable, super slims will generally have lower use since they came out later. Looks are subjective, I like the original fat chunker the most lol. This allows for better alpha effects (think fire on Call of Duty) or MSAA, which the PS3 could not compete with. To give an example, the last two, particularly the Alpha effects are exactly why the Xbox 360 Call of Duty games tend to perform better than the PS3 counterpart since they make heavy use of Alpha effects, which are bandwidth heavy. Even then, its good for light playing & I would not run it 7+hrs at a time. You can put the best thermal paste & pads in the market on it, it will red light eventually still. The cooling design is really bad. The slim is the best of the ps3 revisions. The super slim is ok, I would pick a slim over it. Forgot the exact model but I got a super slim.

They won't play any PS2 games, but they'll most PSX games. The 60GB launch PS3, however, most certainly will, due to it's hardware backwards compatibility, as you know.
If you don't already have a PS3, the best solution to this problem is to just buy a used one. There are a lot of good used PS3 models out there with the PS3 Slim being probably the best one of the lot. It's significantly smaller than the PS3 "fat" (original PS3) but has all the capabilities as its larger and older sibling.
PS3 Slim on the other hand is limited to just the console, a thin 'n' floppy manual, power and USB cables and - horror of horrors - a composite video cable and SCART adaptor. Yup, the exact same Depending on where you live, a late model Xbox 360 might be a better value based on price and availability of games. In the same vein, a fat Xbox one is also kickass value when cheap, as they have a strong backwards compatibility list. A late model slim, or a super slim playstation 3 is still a great option. .
