Farming Sea raiders is a good way to get cash for the dye-works. They tend to only have 1 to 3 ranged guys, the rest using thrown weapons with very small stacks. Solo against 15 raiders can gives 3+ renown. Plus it is easier or more likely at least for the enemy to break if larger group and then can switch to melee. Once I get past solo I'll run around with recruits beating up on looters using send troops, this is really quick, don't care about death etc.
