The rear one is used to fine tune the timing when using Vagcom. This is the only way to set the 2.5tdi timing to its optimum. The top pulley is on a taper and can be used to set the timing. The back of the pump pulley has a timing mark on it so it may be worth setting the engine to tdc and setting the pump in the correct position. Cheers.
Removing the vacuum pump. So the first job was to remove the pump itself. 2 bolts hold it in place at the front of the engine, so after removing the engine belly pan, access to the pump is straight forward. 2.4d is what i have and couldnt ask for anything better. fully loaded with unit,s r and r bed and everything to go with it. down hill with the wind 105 mph, on the flat 80-90 mph easy with ok mpg and up hill it will still sit at 70mph so im happy with that.

The AJA has a sealed in Gasket so you have to buy the complete rover cover. the AAB has a seprate gasket which has pins that locate in the head T: i have a AAB Head now on my AJA which makes things even more complicated.
